Mazda Protege 2003 Air Bags FrontalMazda Protege 2003 Air Bags Frontal Review #10062776 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on Feb 23, 2004.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with AIR BAGS:FRONTAL . i was involved in a head-on collision in my 2003 mazda protege5 while traveling approximately 10-20mph. the other party was traveling approximately 20-25mph. upon impact, the seat belt pretensioner didn't work (i was wearing my seat belt) and none of the airbags infated. the damage to the car was mainly structural, estimates to fix the car were approximately $13,000-$14,000, subsequently the car was 'totaled'. to describe the structural damage, the frame was bent, the right fender and structural parts underneath were buckled at the windshield, and quite a few engine components destroyed as well as all of the 'cosmetic' parts on the front of the car. the damage was classified by the reporting police department as "major". in this accident, i received a patella (kneecap) fracture that is severe enough to keep me off work for approximately five weeks. physical therapy will continue for a total of approximately 6-8 weeks. medical bills will be approximately $8000 or more. on march 19, 2004, i visited the mazda dealership i purchased the car from on january 4, 2004 (the car had only 1204 miles on it at time of accident). i inquired from the available service technician where the airbag sensor was located. it was explained to me that "there's a box that sits close to the dash, in front of the radio/cd changer. in this box is a cup with a little ball in it. around the cup are the sensors that, if the cup and ball are jarred enough in a collision, will set off the airbags." i have been asked by my insurance company (esurance), by the other party's insurance company (aaa), and the collision center (1st class collision) why the airbags didn't go off. i see the other two complaints regarding this same equipment failure and am wondering when there will be something done - does someone have to be seriously injured or killed before an investigation is started? this airbag sensor system obviously seems to be an inadequate feature of this model of mazda.*ak.Vehicle was involved in a crash. 1 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 1204 miles. (you could hear a rattling noise) it sounded like a piece of metal rattling around in the engine. a year ago i took my car into the dealership because of a recall (recall 3005c) to get it checked out (this is what the letter from mazda asked me to do) my car was there only two hours and only looked at maybe about thirty minutes. i received an oil change and then they were to inspect it due to the recall. when i retrieved my car they gave me a certificate of correction, but informed me that nothing had been fixed and that they were only authorized to inspect. that if the part broke that i would be responsible for it even though it was a recall. here i am one year later and i had my car looked at and it appears that two of the screws must have come loose due to the recall. (they were found in my exhaust) i got no help from the dealer. i found the recall instructions online from mazda to the dealer which instructs the dealer to replace the parts if they have not been replaced on any previous occasion (which was procedure b). and if it has been previously worked on they are to proceed with procedure a which instructs them to do an air compression inspection for internal damage and give a certificate of correction. they did the wrong procedure on my car and never actually did what needed to be replaced for my car to be legal and ok to drive. they are now avoiding my calls and not returning numerous e-mails or voice mails. i have been trying the dealer and mazda themselves. on tues .i received nothing but rude mocking from each place telling me that it was my problem. i have been trying everyday since and i have received no response. *nm updated 2/23/2007 - intake manifold shutter and variable tumble control valves.*nm .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 26131 miles. Mazda Protege 2003 Engine And Engine Cooling Engine Review #10187711 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on Apr 03, 2007.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE . i purchased vehicle new in jan 04. while exiting the freeway, i felt a "hiccup" in the engine at which time it ran very poorly and check engine light came. the serpentine belt had also jumped about 25% off drive pulleys. i was traveling out of town at this time and took it to a local service station. technician identified problem as an engine misfire and installed a new belt. i decided not to have service station perform any additional diagnosis preferring take vehicle to dealership instead. dealership determined that a spark plug had failed and came apart. dealership then replaced all spark plugs. vehicle ran fine. appx 1 month later, exact symptoms occurred - engine hiccup, rough idle, check engine light. again i took to dealership. master tech was assigned to my vehicle this time and determined cause to be shutter valve screws had come loose from the intake manifold and entered engine causing damage to spark plug. technician informed me of recall # 3005c that had been issued and that he would contact his regional service manager to request the repair be covered by mazda. regional svc mgr declined to cover costs stating my specific vin was not in the effected range and that my mileage was too high. i looked up the recall and determined the recall issue date to be 6/1/05. at that time my mileage would have been 40,000 to 50,000 miles. i then contacted mazda usa customer assistance - reference number 112751060. i was told that mazda would not cover the expense because my vin # was not in the range of effected vehicles. i was also told that vin range was determined by the nhtsa and not by mazda and that it was illegal for mazda to pay for the repair expense. i believe this to be a lie on the part of mazda. i believe mazda is not accepting its' responsibility to the consumer because this would be admitting the problem is larger than the original scope and will cost the company a substantial amount of money. *jb.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 100000 miles. Mazda Protege 2003 Engine And Engine Cooling EngineMazda Protege 2003 Engine And Engine Cooling Engine Review #10368689 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on Nov 01, 2010.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE . my son bought a 2003 mazda protege 5, back in late july 2010. shortly thereafter, on august 3rd, 2010 in fact, he knowing of an open recall, had the car serviced at the local mazda dealership. apparently they performed part a of recall 3005c and did a compression check and slapped a "recall completed" sticker under the hood. come late august, my son takes the car away to school. on november 1st, 2010, he calls complaining of a "'loud engine noise". 2 days later, we had the car towed to a nearby performance shop. they investigated and noticed the recall 3005c sticker under the hood. knowing this, the performance shop recommended we take the car to the local mazda dealership nearby my sons' school. this second dealership verified with a borescope that there was damage in cylinders 1 and 3. after much disagreement, this second mazda dealership eventually opened the intake manifold and found 7 of the 8 screws and all 4 butterfly valves laying in the bottom of the intake. the second dealership then replaced the intake manifold but upon starting the engine found that the engine noise still exists. now they claim the engine noise is due to "engine bearing failure" and not related to the 3005c recall. after forcing the issue with mazda they claimed no further assistance can be offered. i was then forced to tow the car back to the performance shop. there they removed the cylinder head and found the missing screw embedded in the top of cylinder #2. bearing failure has not been verified by anyone yet. i maintain that the screw being embedded in cylinder #2 plus other metal filings related to the 3005c recall, must have caused the alleged "bearing failure". mazda claims the so called "bearing failure" must have existed previously. apparently, they think i was driving the car around with the bearing problem. looks like legal action will be the next step. all of this could have been avoided had the first mazda dealership replaced the intake manifold in the first place. *tr.Vehicle was on fire. Mazda Protege 2003 Electrical SystemMazda Protege 2003 Electrical System Review #10384300 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on Oct 10, 2010.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ELECTRICAL SYSTEM . the current issues ( which we believe are mazda corporate issues) and inherent to this vehicle which has low, low, low miles have caused the engine to overheat and have resulted in an engine fire, twice, on the freeway: 1)faulty electrical parts: this vehicle has had the same electrical problems since the first day we brought it and has had multiple replacements of the electrical module, batteries, alarm system, and other items, which have proven faulty by mazda. 2)shutter valve recall: ours was inspected, but not replaced even though things were out of sorts. it was later deemed a problem. 3)faulty belts, due to engine overheating, which technicians have told us was from an overheating issue and potentially created by the inherent problems with the electrical system. 4)leaking radiator technicians have indicated this is due to the ongoing overheating problem we have been overwhelmed by the interchanges with mazda personnel regarding a ?lemon? vehicle we purchased in 2003 or 2004. subsequently, we drive it minimally and it only had 30,000 plus miles on t within the 4 year, 50,000 warranty expired. that said, within 24 hours of purchase, the car had electrical problems. when in an ?off? position, the lights stayed on and the alarm sounded errantly and intermittently. the car ran hot, and had other issues we mentioned. the dealer replaced the electrical module and/or alarm system. the problems persisted. we brought the car in for inspection multiple times, and received multiple responses from service technicians: 1)nothing wrong 2)needed routine maintenance, oil, plugs, points, etc 3)multiple battery replacements due to dead batteries and draining issues 4)car out of alignment ( the car had 3 sets of tire replacements at 40k) 5)faulty belts ( we paid for replacement) 6)shutter valve ( recall was not replaced) 7)water pump leak 8)electrical issues not definable, but battery drains 9)engine runs hot and rough 10) fire in engine on freeway. *tr .Vehicle was on fire. Mazda Protege 2003 Engine And Engine CoolingMazda Protege 2003 Engine And Engine Cooling Review #10450574 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on Jan 11, 2010.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING . my 03 protege has vics screws falling out and all issues that comes with it. my car has been parked in the driveway untouched because i cannot afford to pay for the repairs due to how many times my car has had issues and cannot pass emissions. so i have to turn my tags in within the month because mazda wont recognize the issue being their recall since my vin is out of their window for cars being defective. i don't understand why if so many people are having the same problem; why those months when we have the same parts? mazda claims its the torque but obviously its the screws falling out including the butterflies. why was the torque different those 3 months? if mazda is saying the recall is due to the torque being wrong and the screws are falling out then why are so many vehicles that are in and out of the vin number needed to be required for free repair? why are so many vehicles being checked and mechanics finding screws and butterflies in other areas other than where they should be? if the recall is due to torque, then why are you replacing the original screws? if torque is the case why not just use the correct torque usage, you know the torque that's in my car! why are proteges with the vins out of the recall window having the same corrective action when they go to get the repair and get the same parts when they had the correct torque in the first place! its clear this recall isn't about torque, this is about it the recall part being faulty no matter what torque was used. wouldn't it have been more cost effective and easier for you just to use the required torque rather than new parts since you say. mazda doesn't take this seriously and fix their faulty part. we need help! *tr.Mileage was 100000 miles. Mazda Protege 2003 SuspensionMazda Protege 2003 Suspension Review #10605125 MAZDA PROTEGE 2003 car safety problem was reported on June 01, 2014.MAZDA PROTEGE 2003, manufactured by Mazda Motor Corp. had a problem with SUSPENSION . passenger side strut tower has rusted to the point that failure of the suspension is imminent. the rust inhibitor that was applied from mazda motor corp. during manufacturing, on the passenger front wheel well has failed and is allowing water, road salt etc to enter the engine bay and cause severe rusting on the top and side portion of the strut tower where the side motor mount and strut tower brace attach to the strut tower. the failure of the rust inhibitor has now caused the failure of the steel strut tower which in-turn could cause the engine and/or front passenger side suspension to become dislodged and cause a severe accident. pictures can be provided upon request. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 134000 miles. My 2001 626 transmission slips slightly when first put it into drive from park then bucks.
