I have a 2003 Audi A4 1.8 turbo, automatic. On long trips, later in the day, engine cuts out, slows, jerks, like it gets fuel then no fuel, then stops. This happened twice two years ago and just last week. This occurs when gauge reads 1/4 to 3/8ths full. I am thinking that it is out of gas and gauge is bad. Put in gas, everything works fine again, no further problems until gas gets to the same level again, but only on long trips. In town with short trips, the tank can go down into the reserve area with no problems. After the occurrence, I fill up the tank but it only takes 11 gal. The tank holds 15 to 17 gal so it can't be out of gas. Took the car in to a dealer who charged me $275 to take tank down, finding no dirt or anything in the tank, told me that the two sender units were bad and that the car must have run out of gas. Wanted $1000 to replace...I didn't do it knowing that I still had gas in the tank so this couldn't have been the problem. Called another Audi dealer and an independent mechanic, both never heard of this problem and didn't have an answer. This is a real problem on long trips. The only fix that has worked is to fill up when the gauge reached 1/2 and no lower. Any ideas or fixes? Would appreciate it. Thanks for any insight in this.
