Toyota Camry Structure Body Door Safety Report | June 12, 2013
Reported on June 12, 2013
THERE IS A GRAB HANDLE OVER EACH FRONT SIDE DOOR; THE REAR HINGE OF THE HANDLE POSES A SEVERE DANGER TO THE DRIVER'S AND PASSENGER'S HEADS. THE HEADLINER IS PADDED, BUT THIS HANDLE EXTENDS ABOUT AN INCH OUT FROM THE HEADLINER AND IS A HARD PLASTIC COVER OVER A STEEL HINGE. A SEVERE SIDE MOTION, AS IN A CRASH, COULD DRIVE THIS HINGE THROUGH THE DRIVER'S OR PASSENGER'S SKULL. A LESSER SIDE MOTION, AS IN A SUDDEN MANEUVER, COULD HIT THE DRIVER'S HEAD HARD ENOUGH TO DISTRACT THE DRIVER AND CAUSE A CRASH. *TR | |
