Pontiac Grand Am Service Brakes, Hydraulic Foundation Components Disc Caliper Safety Report | Sept 13, 2002

Reported on Sept 13, 2002

FRONT BRAKE CALIPERS ON DISC BRAKES ARE MADE FROM ALUMINUM ALLOY AND BOTH CALIPERS WERE CLOSE TO FAILURE BY 50,000 MILES. PISTON IN CALIPER WAS SO WORN THAT IT WOULD CHATTER WHEN BRAKES WERE APPLIED AT A COMPLETE STOP. THIS DEFECT COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE PISTON TO LODGE IN CALIPER OR SEAL TO FAIL AROUND PISTON CAUSING BRAKING FAILURES. REPLACEMENT CALIPERS ON THE MARKET SUPPOSEDLY FIX THIS DEFECT. WHY HASN'T MANUFACTURER LOOKED INTO THIS POTENTIALLY HARZARDOUS DEFECT?*AK
