"dealer only" repair policy should be discourage because of lengthy towing when vehicles breakdown outside major cities, i.e. the west. customer should not be required to learn after a breakdown that the vehicle must be towed hundreds of miles to a dealer for repairs. currently such vehicles must be towed past large towns/small cities back to a major urban area to a dealer that can fix the vehicle. mfr. should be required to conspiciously disclose such a requirement. this information is currently concealed by mfr. by omission. requiring conspicous disclosure would encourage mfr. to design, mfr. and sell vehicles that can be fixed within a reasonable distance of where they break down. .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 52000 miles. LLC. had a problem with VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL . etm module failed on the freeway and i had to make an emergency stop on the freeway at night. after several minutes the car was able to startup again. when i took the car in for repair, they did not tell me that this was a common problem with this model of volvo and i ended up paying $128 dollars for bogus troubleshooting and no problem found. then less than 4 days later, the car died again, but this time i was lucky and it died on a side street. i looked up the problem on the internet and found quite a few articles of people who had a similar problem. upon driving my car into the dealership, it died and i had to coast the car down 3 hillside blocks and into the dealership. another $50 dollars was charged to me for doing the warranty work and the total cost to replace the throttle module was $723.67. i am very lucky to have an extended warranty on this vehicle, but for anyone that does not, they are being totally screwed by volvo and its dealers because they have not stepped up and replaced this potentially dangerous module that can leave you stranded. it also appears that the particular dealership that i took my car to, made troubleshooting money on me even though nobody would touch my questions regarding the problem when i showed them 3 pages of articles that i found on the web regarding the particular problem and user groups that talked about complaining to volvo.*ak.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 51989 miles. LLC. had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING . after a change of oil at the dealership i drove 168 miles. when i tried to start the car the oil warning light went on. i tried to check the oil level and a burst of oil came out of the stick pit. i had the car towed back to the dealer. *ak we waited three weeks for a part to replace the turbo, but the mechanic couldn't find oil pressure. now they are asking for 2,700 dollars to open the engine and see what is the problem or 6 thousand to replace the engine. i had the warning light on two times before, first time i paid to replace some sealers, the second time they couldn't find the problem. LLC. had a problem with VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL . in the summer of 2003 my wife's 2000 volvo v70 xc suffered a failure of the electronic throttle control system. i was driving at the time and the engine power decreased abruptly causing the vehicle to slow down. fortunately, there was little or no traffic in the vicinity of the failure so that i was able to pull off the road. i turned off the car and then restarted it. it worked well enough to get me back home. i got quotes to fix the system and was told at the time that it would cost around $1000 to replace the part. the car had about 80k miles when this occurred. i didn't need the car to be in service and so waited until the summer of 2004 to have it repaired. i was also pretty upset at the attitude of the volvo people who told me that the part was out of warranty (which it really wasn't since it is part of the emissions systems and therefore must last at least 80k in ct and that if i could afford to repair the car i shouldn't have bought it. the cost for the repair was around $1200. this failure, in my opinion, causes an unsafe condition. i can only imagine what the outcome would have been had i been driving in heavier traffic. the car would have suddenly died and if i were in the passing lane, there would no way to get to the roadside. no telling what would have happened. also, this part should last for the life of the car. i have never heard of a mechanical throttle system ever failing. the mechanical systems will give ample warning before failing so that corrective action can be taken before it becomes hazardous. this condition came on so suddenly it was unsafe. *nm.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 80000 miles. LLC. had a problem with ELECTRICAL SYSTEM . i would like to add my name to the number of people complaining about their volvo's engine stalling repeatedly without warning. i believe this might be from the unit that regulates the amount of air into the vehicles engine. i purchased my 2000 volvo v70xc from santa monica volvo in october 2001 and it is still under warranty. over the last year and a half my engine has stalled over 20 times while driving without any warning. several times this occurred while i was driving 65 miles an hour on a freeway that almost resulted in serious car accidents. sometimes i can restart the car immediately, other times the car has to sit for a while, but four times i had to have the car towed. the first time the engine died on july 5, 2004 i had the car towed to a volvo repair shop in valencia, california. the next morning the repair shop called and told me the car started for them without any problems. so i drove to santa monica volvo on july 7, 2004 and their service department replaced the battery. two months later (september 1, 2004) when the cars engine died again while i was driving, the car was towed to santa monica volvo and the service department told me that nothing was wrong with my car. i told the service department that i did not want the car back until they found what was wrong with it. the service representative then spoke to a manager and called me back to say that my alternator was putting out low voltage and they replaced it. then on june 30th my volvo lost all power again while i was driving and wouldn't start. the car was towed back to santa monica volvo where i was told they needed to do a throttle body cleaning and then replace the mass air flow meter for a total of $708. i bought my volvo for safety reasons and i have never felt more unsafe driving a car. i sincerely hope that your investigation leads to a recall of my volvo. it is the biggest lemon that i have ever owned! *jb *sc .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Vehicle Identification Number (VIN):YV1LZ56D3Y2. LLC. had a problem with ELECTRICAL SYSTEM . i own a 2000 v70 xc volvo. at approximately 56,000 miles the ets (electronic throttle system) light came on. since then the car seems to have instances of acceleration hesitation. i am the second owner of the vehicle. i purchased it approximately three years ago with less than 30,000 miles from a private party. all required and recommended maintenance has been performed by the dealer or by trained volvo mechanics on the recommended schedule by both me and the prior owner. i am aware that this appears to be a frequent problem with the 99-01 volvo xcs. i have contacted the original dealer and received no satisfaction about replacing what clearly appears to be a defective part based on my prior experience with similar vehicles. the dealer said the problem could have a number of causes and that an electronic diagnostic test was necessary to identify the source. given my understanding of other owners' experiences i requested that they perform the test at their expense ($70) in the interests of safety and to help volvo better understand the cause of the problem. the dealer declined. my owner's manual does not discuss any required or recommended maintenance for the associated parts or system. i and the prior owner have always used the recommended quality of fuel (91 octane). i do view the potential failure of the ets as a significant safety risk based on the potential for failure at highway speeds and the rapid loss of speed in heavy traffic. much of my driving of this car is on freeways with 75 mph speed limits and with heavy traffic volumes. from the currently available research it would appear that this is an issue for which volvo should accept responsibility and provide appropriate replacement parts. given the experience of others and the apparent safety risk this does not appear to be a "regular maintenance/parts simply wear out" situation. *jb.Mileage was 57000 miles. LLC. had a problem with VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL . five years ago, we bought a new 2000 volvo v70-xc. it currently has 39,600 miles on it. starting in about 2003, the car began experiencing repeated engine malfunctions -- rough idle, jerky acceleration, stalling and, most alarmingly, sudden loss of power while moving. i once lost power on a traffic circle, which was truly terrifying -- especially since the main reason we purchased the car was the safety of our two small children. we have repeatedly had the car in the shop (martens service center on river road). initially, we were told the car was clogged with carbon and that the problem was essentially our fault for not driving it on the highway more often. now that we are past the warranty, we have been paying for repairs -- though on our most recent visit in sept 2005, when i mentioned the nhtsa investigation, martens replaced the etm for free. i think this is a defective and dangerous vehicle and it should have been recalled a long time ago. earlier in the car's history, we experienced a range of electrical malfunctions involving the turn signals, which failed for no apparent reason. because those problems occurred during the warranty period, we did not have to pay to have them repaired -- but the danger and hassle factors were still significant. *nm.Vehicle Identification Number (VIN):YV1LZ56D6Y2. LLC. had a problem with ELECTRICAL SYSTEM . i have a 2000 volvo v70 cross country wagon. the problem began in december 2005. car starts but immediately dies, starts but dies, starts but dies and then, finally, catches. this has happened on about 15 occasions since dec 10, 2005 and takes about 3 to 6 tries before engine catches. car surged once while on the highway. i had the computer replaced in jan 2005 (before this problem emerged), the starter motor replaced (june), the thermostat replaced (january 2006) and recently the catalytic converter replaced (latter covered under warranty). i have only 75,000 miles on this car and it's beginning to feel like a lemon. the service dealer put me off when i stated that it must have something to do with the electronic throttle module. i don't have all the old parts but maybe either the thermostat of the catalytic converter. i can't take the car any distance for fear that i won't be able to start it. the dealer says the check engine light has to come on and indicate etm failure before they are obligated to replace the etm. the check engine light did come on for the 2 problems, thermostat and catalytic converter. i don't want to blame the dealer for failing to respond because they did replace the catalytic converter as an under-warranty item and they did seem to honestly look for the problem. but we all know the etm is waiting to fail and might even be in the process of failing. why wasn't volvo forced into a recall for this problem? i'd appreciate any help you can give. thanks. *jb.Mileage was 74000 miles. LLC. had a problem with VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL . the ets (electronic throttle system) light came on repeatedly over a period of two weeks. on two occasions, on the highway, the car lost power totally when the light illuminated. the dealer said the car needs a new electronic throttle module (etm), which will cost about $1,500. this car has 85,000 miles, virtually all of which were highway miles as it is used to commute from ma to ct. a search of the web indicated that this sensor--the etm--was defective in 1999 and 2000 volvos. in july 2001, volvo issued a tech bulletin stating that problems occurred only when the owner made many short trips. further, the tech bulletins said the etm could be cleaned (but not replaced) if the car still was under the original warranty. this car has 85,000 and has always been serviced by a volvo dealer. *nm.Mileage was 84500 miles. LLC. had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:COOLING SYSTEM:FAN . upon exiting the highway, after traveling at speed for 30 minutes, a knocking sound came from the engine. the engine stalled at the end of the exit ramp and steam was evolving from the engine compartment. the temperature gauge was at maximum. steam was evolving near the turbo at the firewall. the engine cooling fan was not running, but making a buzzing sound. the engine oil was hot, steam or smoke evolved from the dip-stick tube, but the level was good. the coolant bottle was empty. i tried to start the engine, the engine cranked rapidly, as if there was no compression, and more steam was produced at the exhaust side of the head. i pushed the vehicle to a nearby service station. the service station topped off the coolant bottle, placed the vehicle on a lift and cranked the engine. from below, coolant could be seen exiting the exhaust side of the engine. i had the vehicle towed to a nearby foreign vehicle service station for further evaluation. this station determined there is no compression in cylinders #2 through #5, and only 40 psig in cylinder #1. the timing belt is in place. the station believes the engine head is cracked or warped and suggests there may be considerable bottom end damage as well such as pistons, rings, and cylinder sleeves due to excessive heat. i contacted volvo cars and explained that this incident seems very similar to the current nhtsa campaign # 04v451000 regarding engine cooling system fan failure on 2000-2001 v70's and 2001 v70xc's (and other models). volvo contends my vehicle (a 2000 v70xc) is not included in this recall. volvo customer service was not able to confirm the cooling fan on my vehicle is different than the defective fan covered by the recall. *jb.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 55000 miles. LLC. had a problem with LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE:LOCK . 2000 volvo v70xc rear latch failure. my xc wagon has experienced intermittent rear latch failures since 2002. the problem only used to occur during the winters, which account for 3 months a year in ma. i brought it it to my volvo dealer, barry's volvo of dartmouth, ma on 2/17/2004. since they were testing it in their heated garage, of course, the problem was not reproduced. they lubed the latch and sent the car home. we dealt with it for a year and then i found the tsbs on the internet, thanks to brickyard.com and the nhtsa. i have since tried two more times to get my dealer to repair the latch as now the latch fails just about every time i close the rear trunk. i fear for my children's safety as well as my pet, who rides in the rear, and any belongings we place back there. i have called volvo na and was told they would make sure my dealer would remedy the problem. i called the dealer again and they said there was no safety issue, recall or whatever for my car and they would gladly fix it at my expense. i've finnaly had enough and decided to file a complaint with the nhtsa since there is a documented problem with this car, nhtsa00v239000 .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 55209 miles. Having fuel delivery issues, car will not maintain idle and pedal does not work. I have replaced both fuel pumps, coil, wires, cap and rotor, plugs, throttle position sensor.
