just took my 2005 tundra 4wd truck in for service and ...

just took my 2005 tundra 4wd truck in for service and was informed that I needed a new:"gear" for the rack and pinion steering.. Truck has 86,600 miles, and extended warranty ran out in Nov.
2010. Is this a "normal " problem for that mileage or age vehicle?
