I have a 1998 RAV4 with 130,000 miles on its odometer. It was parked in my driveway for about four hours after driving it. When I restarted it again, smoke came up from beneath the hood, the accelator peddle froze, and the brake peddle failed to work properly. I got out and saw the paint of the rightside of the hood had turned brown in color and melted. I lifted the hood, which was burnt underneath, along with melted plastic parts and wiring around the engine, which was covered with an ash-like substance. The damage to the engine area was more than apparent. This occurred this afternoon and I am taking it to the dealership (Victory Toyota in Seaside, California), where it was purchased and see whether ot not the manufacturer will provide any repair coverage. I hope not have any high expectations in this regard; nevertheless, this appears to me to be a design and manufacturing defect.
