y cant i adjust my sterring wheel on my toyota corolla 2001

My 2006 toyota corolla will occasionally when pushing the accelerator sound like it goes into neutral.  It is a manual transmission.  Could this be a throw out bearing, or clutch needing adjustment?  Hopefully something simple

1991 Toyota Corolla.  Repeatedly have to replace the alternator.  Runs for a while, then alternator fails.  I first suspected that they were bad rebuilt alternators.  Now I am thinking that it is something else.  Wiring?  Please advise
