2004 Hyundai Sonata LX: Case of sudden unintended acceleration on parking.Pulled slowly into parking spot. Passenger noticed were level with pickup door next to Sonata being parked. Sonata driver had his foot on brake and was going very slow. All of a sudden car accelerated very fast by itself. Went over low concrete barrier, over side walk (thank goodness no one was walking by) and car crashed into brick wall of bldg.Noise was unbelievable. Vehicle had $7,000 damage and was totaled. Driver and passenger were disoriented after collision, Driver's head and chest hit steering wheel, and since that time his health has deteriorated and his memory has diminished.. Both driver and passenger were wearing seat belts. Someone opened door and turned off engine. Drivers airbag did not deploy, passenger's did. Passenger's seat belt left leg bruise on right breast., Hyundai said not responsible and pass's seatbelt not on,
Comment: Hyundai said not fault of car but will not provide driver with mechanical and computer report. Driver thinks computer went haywire. Passenger argues still had seatbelt on (no chime sound indicating seat belt not on when engine was on). Hyundai says because passenger seat belt not hooked. Said that was why passenger's airbag deployed and driver's air bag did not deploy. :This crash was a front end, sudden unintended acceleration upon parking, where 2004 Sonata crashed into brick wall just as driver was about to put car into PARK. Noise was unbelievable. Sounded as though pistons were coming out of engine. $7,000 damage and car totaled. We understood if you had a front end crash both air bags would deploy. We think driver air bag was faulty but Hyundai will not provide the reports They tell us that the report on OUR car is"proprietary and confidential information. As a matter of policy, we do not voluntarily produce such reports"....."trust you understand our position with respect to these materials". Husband can now not function and lead a normal life, and Hyundai thinks the reporrt on "our car" is confidential. What a crock. We are thinking of talking to an attorney to get these reports. Over theyears we had had a lot of computer problems with Hyundai S. 2004. That car obviously was not safe. When we reported this to the NTSB we found another 2004 Sonata owner who had the identical sudden unintended acceleration upon parking accident in March, except that lady had had a "backward sudden unintended acceleration upon parking" in January. If we had parked where we first were going to park, we would have dropped 25' when our car took off. We would never, ever buy a Hyundai again. Now we have a Ford Fusion and now realize how light that 2004 Sonata was. We were lucky we went so long without a disaster with the car. Also never expect Hyundai to help you. They coud not care less with their "form" letters. sukisammy@comcast.net.
