Follow-up to Mike Bowen issues- It was found that in the current problem the cause was deterioration of the tone ring due to rust corrosion. This corrosion had caused the wheel speed sensor to be damaged. As I drive in an area where it involves a lot of uphill and downhill driving most local drivers appear to require brake service on these units frequently due to wear. I rarely use my brakes except for final stopping due to extensive use of my exhaust brake and O/D defeat. The mechanic suggests steaming the tone ring occasionally to keep rust from building to the point where the sensor is affected.
