My husband and I are the original owners of a 2008 Fusion SEL. While I was driving on the highway to work the vehicle suddenly opened up, full throttle, accelerating continuously up to 90 mph and climbing even when brakes were applied. I had to desperately maneuver the car to the shoulder, riding the anti-lock brakes, until I finally had to shove the auto transmission into neutral before the car would stop. Fortunately, traffic was slight, and no one was injured during the incident. I took the car to the local Ford dealership. The first time I went they said I must have been 2-footing the pedals, or that I had managed to confuse the "finicky" 6-speed automatic. (Really?? I outsmarted my car's technology by driving 3 miles to work??) The second trip to the Ford dealership told me that their service department contacted Ford, and they agreed that the best option was to clean the electronic throttle control (ETC) - although THERE IS NO GUARANTEE THAT THIS WILL ELIMINATE THE SUDDEN ACCELERATION ISSUE!! Needless to say, I have little confidence that this issue is resolved, which infuriates me since I pay a lot of money every month to own that car. What continues to bother me is that Ford has acknowledged there is an issue with the accelerator overriding the brake, so future models were fitted with an ETC whose brake overrides the accelerator - but NOTHING was done to fix or retrofit cars with the faulty design. Technically, my family's life is in danger every time we ride in this car - and if we sell this car, so are the future owners' lives. This oversight is an intentional, callous disregard for consumer safety, and a deliberate choice by Ford to chose profit over ethics.
