Spare tire cable broke causing the tire/wheel to deposit on the roadway.
Since then I have chained the spare tire to the undercarriage in case it happens again.
It frayed and broke at the connector end of the cable (terminal end).
This could have been a serious accident. I never did locate the spare tire or even know where or when it fell off. I have checked the local newspaper(s) for reports of a spare tire in the road and did not find any. It may of happened during one of our road trips and I'll never know what happened.
This is obviously a bad design and there should be fail-safe mechanisms in place to prevent this from happening to others. Seems like a simple a cheap fix for FORD. I have made what I believe is a adequate fix, but it requires the spare tire changer to crawl under the vehicle and unhook the chains. Not only doe this get the changer dirty, it exposes him/her to risks of a rolling vehicle and other dangers under the vehicle.
I hope Ford Motor Company is addressing this serious issue.
