Had an unsettling incident this morning with my 2002 Ford Escape. Had stopped and waved a driver to turn in front of me to enter a street to my right. Upon excellerating on the gas pedal, I heard a small "thunk" under the front that sounded like a stone flying up and hitting the under side. Didn't think much of it. A few yards later, still excellerating up to road speed (limit 35-40mph) suddenly the right front side of my car hit the pavement and it pulled uncontrollably to my right, even though I had control of the wheel but couldn't steer a correction. I applied the brakes as it scraped along the pavement and crossed a very low berm and right front onto grass, rear of car at an angle partly in travel lane. It had caused blue smoke to emit from friction. I thought a tire blew out and the rim was scraping on the pavement. Upon alighting and checking, the whole right front wheel, tire, and part of the axle was out from under the car out to the side. A police officer happened along in 30 seconds, and took control of the scene. He called my Insurance Company tow service. When the tow driver arrived, he said that part of the frame snapped right off and the ball joint with it, and looked like it had rotted. This should not have happened, and I (and others) could have been killed in places and highways I have very recently travelled! My Dad was the previous owner (with whom I lived) and turned the car over to me, having bought it new (Sunnyside Motors, Holden, MA) We both took excellent care of it, religiously, all services done on time and anything suspicious being checked and/or repaired. My hope is that FORD would do something for me here!
