Why do the BCM's in the 2009 Malibu only last for 40,000-50,000 miles ?

Just took my 2002 Malibu in to my mechanics shop because I could not make left turns. He said I was lucky my carriage was totally rotted. I have owned this car since 2002 and it only has 82,000 miles.
