TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998 car safety problem was reported on June 25, 2011.TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998, manufactured by TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION had a problem with VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL . i have owned this vehicle for over 7 years. today, the only occasion of the following occurred. driving i-95 in north florida at approx. 72 mph, i removed my foot from the accelerator to begin a lane change as i approached a slower vehicle to the front. the accelerator, of its own accord, pressed itself to the floor and the vehicle began to accelerate on its own, reaching a speed of 93 mph within a few seconds. i applied the brakes, which were totally ineffective; the vehicle continued to increase in speed. i came within a few feet of rear-ending the car i had begun to go around, and just before impact i turned off the ignition, which cut off the motor. i moved from the middle lane to the shoulder of the road, and while coasting, turned the key back to the 'on' position, without starting the motor. instantly the motor revved on its own to tach redline, and i turned the key to the 'acc' position; the motor shut off. this occurred three times, and the entire time the accelerator pedal was pressed to the floor. it was not stuck under the floor mat, as i checked this while coasting. the pedal could not be pried up by my toe, but was stuck fast. i had reduced speed to about 30 mph. after 1/2 mi coasting, the pedal returned to the normal position on its own, and i was able to start the car. it drove normally the entire way home, about 60 miles. if i had panicked and not turned off the engine within the few seconds i had, i would have certainly impacted the car in front of me which would have resulted in a crash in excess of 90mph. there was traffic around me at that point, and it would have resulted in a multiple-car crash. this is my wife's car and i cannot let her drive the car again. i find no recalls, but this situation most certainly was very real, and very dangerous. this is not to be dismissed by calling it 'driver error', or a pedal stuck under a mat. i stayed rational, and controlled the situation. do something meaningful before someone else dies, nhtsa. *tr.Mileage was 254299 miles. TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998 car safety problem was reported on Dec 01, 2010.TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998, manufactured by TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION had a problem with STRUCTURE:BODY . i own a 1998 toyota 4 runner with a safety issue. the frame is rusted out where the front portion of the rear leaf spring bracket is welded to the frame. this was pointed out to me by an auto body repair person who's father had a tacoma that rusted out in the same spot. his vehicle was granted 1.5 times over kelly blue book value and the vehicle was seized from him at the time due to safety. my 4 runner is only 13 years old with a kelly blue book value of 6500.00. it looks and runs great. but obviously this vehicle is not worth that now and cannot be sold due to the seriousness of the frame. it also cannot be repaired. eventually this will result in a failure and depending on what speed the vehicle is traveling at the time will tell how serious the accident will be. it appears that toyota has very little to do with my concerns. i sent three certified letters to toyota expressing my concerns with safety. the letter sent to the president yoshimi inaba that was not forwarded to him, was returned due to an erroneous address so it appears he is being sheltered. i was offered $500.00 reimbursement on service, parts or accessories or a 1500.00 'gift' based on toyota's 'goodwill offer' towards a new toyota. this "gift" was offered by an executive analyst with toyota customer experience whom apparently doesn't want the top executives to receive customer complaints. based on comparisons that the tacoma and tundra owners received, i don't feel the so-called "goodwill" of being a toyota customer. it seems there must be litigation to get toyota's well-bragged-about customer care. safety is #1 at toyota if they are going to make a new sale! safety for old customers is out the window if the sale is from the past. looks like toyota does not really back their products unless there is a death. *tr.Mileage was 140000 miles. TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998 car safety problem was reported on June 13, 2013.TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998, manufactured by TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION had a problem with STEERING . two weeks ago i was driving down a flat paved road and my lower ball joint (atm 1012460) came off for no reason causing me to skid to a halt. my tire was sideways and pushed into my fender causing damage to the wheel well and other parts. this part (lower ball joint) was replaced 8 months prior along with tie rods, axle, control arm, upper ball joint and a number of other items in that area. riebes auto parts replaced the faulty ball joint, tire, fender, and other parts that were damaged. i just got it back last night and my wife stated it felt like it was pulling to the left. i drove it to my mechanic and on the way the other side popped of going 15 mph on a flat road. so all the same damage again. this is a serious issue because y wife and kids were just in the car a few hours before this happened. if it would have occurred on the freeway it would have resulted in rolling. altrom lower ball joint for a 1998 toyota 4runner was the part. *tr.Vehicle was involved in a crash. TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998 car safety problem was reported on Dec 15, 2010.TOYOTA 4RUNNER 1998, manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation had a problem with UNKNOWN OR OTHER . the frame was poorly designed from the factory. with the hollow style frame as thin as it is, does not have proper drainage. this design from toyota causes premature oxidization of the frame/under carriage, because moisture from normal driving conditions is failed to be evacuated from the frame even after being kept in a dry warm place for storage. this problem is widely documented online in forums dedicated specifically to these vehicles. the frame rust is so bad on mine, i can no longer drive it. i am recently unemployed, and have not nearly enough savings for a new vehicle. this will become a national safety hazard soon as higher mileage 4runners of this frame design are commonly coming down in price on the used market and are often sought after as good "starter car" for new drivers and teens. toyota should do the honorable thing , which they demonstrated and saved lives with the recall of tacoma model frames. i am now car-less in a rual area, which makes me pretty much unemployable. thanks toyota, if the frame i bought was half as well built as the body and engine of the auto i purchased, i would not be in the situation, and the highways would not be at risk, which they are now. .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 135555 miles.
