Subaru Outback 1998 TiresSubaru Outback 1998 Tires Review #745049 SUBARU OUTBACK 1998 car safety problem was reported on .SUBARU OUTBACK 1998, manufactured by SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. had a problem with TIRES . we purchased a brand new subaru outback s/w in 1999 and recently had a flat tire. upon placing the "mini" spare provided with the car and driving (under 50 mph) only 19 miles to a tire dealer to have the flat repaired, the rear end was damaged. it cost $800 to have the rear end gears replaced. it turns out that the "mini" spare provided with the car cannot be used without disabling the all wheel drive, by finding and replacing a fuse under the hood (listed in the instructions for spare removal last on page 2 of the owners manual). oh yeah, the spare can only be used on the rear wheels. this information is all "hidden" in the owners manual. since we have auto insurance that includes towing, we would have been much better off towing the car to the tire dealer to have the flat repaired (for free) than using the spare provided and paying $800 to have the rear end rebuilt. Subaru Outback 1998 Engine And Engine Cooling Exhaust SystemSubaru Outback 1998 Engine And Engine Cooling Exhaust System Review #10102875 SUBARU OUTBACK 1998 car safety problem was reported on July 06, 1998.SUBARU OUTBACK 1998, manufactured by SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC. had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM . engine overheating started 10 months ago on long trips only. overheating was common when engine was under heavier than normal loads for long periods of time(climbing hilss, etc.). fluid in radiator was eventually deplented leading to sharp rise in engine temperature. lately this has been worse as only 30 miles of normal driving will cause the same symptoms. the fault turned out to be a head gasket failure on subaru r2.5l type 1 engines. the coolant was being forced out of the radiator by the slow leak of exhaust gases in the coolant around the radiator. this vechicle has been serviced since new by only the local subaru dealer. a search on the internet for subaru 2.5l engines 1996-1999 (legacy) turned up multiple hits for owners with this same problem. failure is as low as 40k miles to over 100k for the same problem. this multi-layer gasket for the type 1 engine has be redesigned 6 times, leading one to surmise that the head gaskets are defective. the type2 engine also has this failure but this has been intercepted by subaru of america by adding a "lubricant" to the coolant, ie: block sealer. this engine should have been recalled to replace the multiple defects which subaru will only do on type 2 engines and only if the owner knows to ask for the "secret waranty". given that there is no other choice, i plan to pull the engine myself and fix the problem. the dealer wants over $2k to do the same work. *ak.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 93000 miles. (before 60,000 i had the dealer check out the whole car and they could find nothing. when the transmission failed i took it in again and the mechanic told me "nothing is wrong"... i am not kidding; they were not competent enough to know that the transmission was not performing properly!!). after that experience there was no way i was going to replace the transmission with another subaru product. i took it to aamco for a rebuild. the mechanic there told me that the factory settings for the clutch assembly were set at 50 thousandths and should have been set at 15 thousandths or less. in other words, the factory built the transmission to self-destruct. when i approached takao saito, president of subaru about this problem, he had linda fouch contact me by telephone. she promised to help out with the repair bill because the failure was so close to the warranty. when she discovered that i was not interested in litigaton, she promptly forgot her promise and failed to respond to any further correspondence! if subaru is to keep its loyal customer base, it needs to aggressively address the problem of quality control and mend the bad experiences of its patronage. .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 61000 miles. I test drove a 2011 Subaru Outback yesterday at night in a very dark area with the headlights on. I could only see out of the bottom third of the windshield. The top two thirds of the windshield looked as if a black curtain had dropped down over i I notice if I quickly accelerate/go into overdrive - front of car will hum. Do I need to have something checked out? 2004 forester xt, strong gas smell in the cold weather when the heat is on. They won't fix it because they "can't find it" at my dealership. Do I need a new fuel line or is there an easier fix? Thank you for these, can find a decent review now. My 1998 subaru forester stutters/hiccups/bucks (whatever you call it) when going uphill, and when accelerating on a straight path, can it be the transmission? I HAVE A SUBARU FORESTER 2000 TAIL LIGHT/PLATE LIGHT/'FRONT SIGNAL LIGHT STAYS ON.ONCE FUSE IS REMOVED LIGHT GOES OUT.WHAT COULD THE PROBLEM BE? I own a 2008 Subaru impreza, till last week i was fine, but now it is having some problem i.e it is making whining sound from steering pump, will i have to replace the steering pump and hoe much will it cost. Standard on all Impreza models are anti lock disc brakes, stability control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints to help mitigate crash-induced whiplash 2006 Subaru outback died. Will not tke a boost. With battery cable connected there is an error code in the odometer. Does anybody know what this can be? 2007 Forester bangs into gear-been doing this mainly in cold weather but now all the time. Dealer always says not problem-it has to "warm up" and doesnt want ot deal with it. My 2002 Impreza Outback Sport's check engine light comes on when I'm going downhill, not all the time. Also (not all the time), if I don't downshift when coming to a stop, the car dies, not stalls, dies. It starts right back up. The engine l i just wrecked my 04 wrx front impact and no air bag and seat belt locked after the impact...how do i contact some one to have this investigated?
