MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Sept 15, 2005.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS . i purchased an 05 mazda rx8 in jan of this year. several weeks ago, i was informed by other drivers that my driver's headlight causes them a distraction because it glows brighter, as if the high beam has come on. i have seen this myself when i drove another car in front of mine. i took the car into service at the local mazda dealer and was informed that the light is functioning properly because the other car on the lot does it also." i believe this issue needs to be looked into because it is a serious distraction and can cause an accident. from a driver looking back at the rx8 through the rear view mirror it looks as if someone is shining a spot light on them. this is a distraction that can lead to a vehicle accident. this is very serious and i can't seem to get anyone to look into this situation. if there is anyone you can suggest that i speak with, please let me know..Vehicle Identification Number (VIN):JM1FE17N350. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Apr 30, 2006.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with SEAT BELTS . the front seat belt in a 2005 rx-8 was inserted into the back seat receiver where the back seat belt would normally go. the individual that did this was unfamiliar with the car and ended up being trapped in the rear of the car. we had to cut the seat belt to get him out. we called the mazda 800 road side assistance and after being on hold for 20 min were informed that there was no emergency release and would have to cut the belt. we were also informed that the mazda dealer would take care of this as it should not have happened. besides the fact that we had to cut the seat belt to get him out, the fact that he was able to get the buckle locked into the rear receiver and could not disengage it is a serious safety issue. 1. the belt would not provide the proper safety in a crash. 2. the inability to get out of the belt could have resulted in a fatality. both the passenger side belt and the rear passenger side receiver have to be replaced at the owners expense. the repair has been scheduled for next week and is not being covered by mazda. *jb.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mazda Rx-8 2005 problem was reported in MILFORD, NH. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Dec 10, 2007.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY:PEDAL/LINKAGE . my mazda rx-8 has a manual transmission, and the clutch bracket just broke off for no special reason. it is to my understanding that under any circumstances these components should not break. mazda did fix it for me. funny thing is mazda tech line saids this is a *one time warranty repair* only. this clutch bracket problem is a very well known issue in the rx-8 community, but mazda just keep replacing broken brackets and wait for user's warranty period is over. i just do not understand what do mazda mean by "one time repair" only. what i concern now is that. what if the clutch bracket breaks when im driving on the highway at 50 miles an hour? it will not be funny and i might just die. another thing is that, mazda always try to blame it on aftermarket parts for their own failure. there should be a lot of rx-8 user complaining about this clutch bracket issue. please check.*cn.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 34116 miles. Mazda Rx-8 2005 Power Train Manual Transmission Review #10235827

MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Apr 10, 2008.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION . clutch assembly faulty design. while driving and shifting gears (manual transmission) the clutch pedal assembly snaps, resulting in the loss of ability to shift gears. after pulling over to the side of the road, the car had to be started in 1st gear to drive to safety. the thin metal tears away from around one of the bolts that holds the assembly to the firewall. this is happening on other rx-8's of people i associate with to the point that welding up the old bracket is becoming common. mazda has not come up with a stronger assembly since they introduced the rx-8 in 2004. the alternatives to correct the issue (out of warranty) is to: (a) purchase a new one from mazda. (b) have your old assembly welded or purchase a remanufactured welded one. (c) purchase a bracket that adds support to the assembly i did both b & c, welded and added support. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 61000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Feb 10, 2006.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE . hi, i purchased my 2005 rx8 new in december of 2005. i have 38000 miles at present time. my vehicle has been towed three times due to stalling. i have had my vehicle in for all recalls and it has passed all test. i am still having problems with engine stalling while driving. my vehicle also back fires at times blowing black smoke from tail pipes. i have serious concerns over the safety of my vehicle due to the known fires caused by the rotary engine. i have phoned and visited many dealers to see if mazda has issued a buy back or trade due to issues with the rx8 and they have all replied with "sorry, but we can sell you a different mazda at retail". i have had my vehicle to the mazda repair shop so many times that i no longer even bother to take it in because i always get the same answer. i really just want my car fixed or something else to drive that is safe. i think mazda needs to recognize that there is a real safety issue and peoples lives are in danger. the issues with my car are so many that i do not like to drive it. currently the check engine light stays on. please feel free to contact me for further issues with this vehicle. *tr.Mileage was 11000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Oct 31, 2008.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY:PEDAL/LINKAGE . i have a 2005 mazda rx8 and for the past 2 years the dealership has replaced my clutch pedal assembly 3 times because of a loud squeal when pressing the clutch pedal. my most recent visit they replaced it again.. the other night i was out with my girlfriend driving long distances and my pedal began to feel really strange and it didn't seem to want to shift properly.. i drop her off and i go home the next morning i wake up to clean my car and i back up and then move forward and my shifter is completely stuck! and the clutch pedal is literally touching the brake pedal.. i tried to see i could still turn the car on and the pedal stuck to the floor as if there were no clutch fluid.. fortunately we were not driving when this happened but this is a danger to many people who are driving manual transmissions. upon inspection the thins bracket that holds the assembly together was torn... the vehicle will be at the dealership for the next few days for repairs.. it has 49,600 miles approx. *tr .0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 49600 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Nov 25, 2008.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:CLUTCH ASSEMBLY . i had my 2005 mazda rx-8 towed to the dealership and was told that my clutch pedal assembly was broken and was making it difficult to drive and shift gears, i believe it's a safety hazard and is poor workmanship. i've heard that this is very common on rx-8's that aftermarket companies are producing clutch pedal reinforcement kits. you know it's really a problem when aftermarket companies address and flaw in a product. especially when it's part of the clutch and safety of the car. and it's not even covered under warranty, which is horrible. not only did they produce a flimsy product, but now i have to pay to have it fixed. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 50750 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on July 22, 2009.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING . i own a 2005 mazda rx8 with 35,000 miles on the car. it had to be taken to the dealership recently for a rough idle and hard start problem. after much costly investigation (costly to me 590$), it was found that my renesis engine is losing compression and could possibly fail at any moment. after contacting corporate hq about this problem the dealership tested the engine which passed by a minimal percent, just enough not to replace the engine under warranty. after some personal research on this matter, i've found hundreds of other rx8 owners having the same problem with little or no help from mazda other than replacing the damaged engine with the same model of faulty engine. reports from owners of engines dying in the middle of dangerous a intersections and such are very unsettling being an owner myself having the same problem. there have been owners that are now on their second and third engines as well with seemingly no end to the repairs. in my case, the dealership guaranteed that my engine would fail within six months so to "be careful" and "keep and eye on it". this is unacceptable. obviously there is something seriously wrong with these engines and i think they are unsafe. mazda has added an extended warranty to these engines for up to 100,000 miles but that does not solve the problem of these engines failing while in motion or in the middle of a busy intersection. it only replaces one burnt out bomb with a bomb with a new fuse. i seriously think this should fall under the "lemon-law" and i would like more to be done about this issue because it seems rx8 owners are being left without options here except to make lemonade from their 30,000$ lemon. me included.*tr.Mileage was 35367 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Sept 24, 2009.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:EXHAUST SYSTEM:EMISSION CONTROL:CATALYTIC CONVERTOR . a new catalytic converter was purchased from a mazda dealer in mayaguez, puerto rico on august 29, 2009. the same was placed on the vehicle, a 2005 mazda rx-8 shinka model, one week after the purchase since we had to wait for the arrival of this part and a new set of spark plugs that was also purchased at a price of $200.00. the car was not in use until the end of september 2009. on september 24, 2009 the car had a failure and i could see smoke coming out of the car and the car turned off in the middle of the highway. i could smell burnt plastic and saw melted plastic coming below the car. the day all this happened, it was raining so the car was protected from a fire due to the rain. i got pictures of some of the melted parts. after the car was towed to the dealer they told me that the heat produced by the catalytic converter burned the new spark plugs, the spark plugs cables, the modules and that there was ash on the system that needed to be cleaned. they do not want to replace all the parts that burned at the consequence of the faulty catalytic converter since my car guarantee was no longer valid. they did not make any efforts to solve the problem knowing that all the damages were due to the faulty condition of the catalytic converter. they will only provide a new catalytic converter ($1500.00 cost) but i have to pay about the same amount for the rest of the damage. i knew that another client had the same problem with a new catalytic converter on the same model of car and that the part was also supplied by autoland. i have seen on the internet other complaints about these faulty catalytic converters. mazda should be responsible for the damages produced by the failure of their catalytic converters. *tr udated 01/13/10. *jb.Mazda Rx-8 2005 problem was reported in BOQUERON, PR. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Dec 23, 2009.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with STRUCTURE . i bought a used mazda rx8 (2005 with about 60 thousand miles) with a manual transmission. after about 3 months of daily driving (no racing or hard shifting) my clutch pedal broke while approaching a red light. the bracket that holds the pedal in place broke due to its very thin metal design. upon researching the issue online i have found that many rx-8 owners are having the same issue. i have installed a reinforced bracket at my own expense and still need to make some adjustments because it has unaligned the gears in the transmission. if this break would have occurred at any other time i believe it could easily result in serious injury or death. i spend a lot of time on the highway getting to school and i believe that at 65 mph this break would have at least destroyed the transmission. this issue needs to be resolved and a recall must be implemented. *tr.Mileage was 60000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Feb 19, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION . i own a 2005 mazda rx8 with 30k miles. i noticed a squeaking noise when applying my clutch pedal approx a month ago. the other evening while i was attempting to pull onto a busy road the clutch made a loud popping noise when i applied the clutch and i was unable to put it into gear. luckily i was able to roll back to a safe place and wait for a tow. mazda informed me this is not a warranty item & i will be responsible to pay for the repair. i've read other complaints and this is a safety issue. had i been able to pull into traffic and it broke, i would not of been able to shift which would have left me in a very unsafe situation. i'm very disappointed that mazda is not willing to replace this part w/o a charge. i think this should be looked into. *tr.Mileage was 300000 miles. Mazda Rx-8 2005 Power Train Manual Transmission Review #10315939

MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Feb 23, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION . information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) around 30 days ago i heard a "pop" sound when i depressed the clutch pedal of my 2005 mazda rx-8. it felt a little softer after the "pop" sound. i thought something had broken but could not see anything and the clutch seemed to work ok. however, over the next 30 days, it became harder and harder to get the manual transmission into reverse. on february 23, 2010, i brought my 2005 mazda rx-8 to congressional mazda in rockville, md to have my clutch inspected. the dealer informed me the clutch pedal assembly bracket was broken and needed to be replaced. the quote was over $500 so i said i would bring the car back in when i had the money. however, when i drove away i could not shift out of 1st gear and the car was not drivable. i immediately drove back to the dealer in 1st gear and asked them to order the part and replace the clutch pedal assembly bracket. when the clutch pedal assembly was replaced, the car shifted fine. i have the broken clutch pedal assembly and i can see clearly that the metal on one side of the mounting bolt has torn apart making it impossible to fully engage the clutch. that must have been the "pop" sound i heard. i have 77,000 miles on my rx-8. i drive the car to work, not on competitive or challenging tracks or courses. i am very concerned that mazda used poor quality metal and/or poor quality spot welds in constructing the clutch pedal assembly on the 2005 rx-8 and i request that nhtsa evaluate if there is a defect in manufacturing quality of that part. i have the old clutch pedal assembly bracket and can send it to nhtsa for inspection. i believe mazda needs to recall the cars and replace the clutch pedal assembly with a better constructed system. the replacement clutch assembly i received has the same poor quality metal and spot welds as the original part. mazda does not seem to be addressing this potentiality serious safety problem. please look into this situation. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Feb 27, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION . while driving a 2005 mazda rx8 i lost control after shifting from 5 to 4th gear. the clutch pedal stuck in and moved slightly right near the break pedal and would not release. this surprised me which caused me to run off the side of the road. i called a tow company to transport the vehicle back to the toyota dealer where i bought it used with 58000 miles on it. they said the clutch had to be replaced for 1400 dollars. at the time i didn't have the money so i asked for it to be towed back to a local garage. my local garage found that the clutch pedal assemble broke away from the mounting plate. this is a part that you would not expect to break. all indications point to a faulty weld. the metal ripped from the point of a spot weld. this spot weld may have weakened what is relatively thin metal for this use. i had a local garage replace the part for 500 dollars with parts and labor. the car was still under the original guarantee but mazda refused to pay for any of the cost because it was not repaired by mazda. all i wanted was the cost of the part. i explained to them that i have a safety concern if this were to happen to someone at highway speeds. *tr.Mileage was 58500 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Nov 03, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING . my 2005 rx8 continually leaked oil to the point of the engine oil light coming on. since rx8's consume oil in the combustion process, at first this seemed somewhat normal. after a few days of adding oil only to have the light come back on, i took my car to the dealer. the mechanic brought me out to the car to show me that the oil cooling lines had been rusted out and as he put it "were spraying oil". aside from the fact that mazda used parts that don't resist corrosion, this is a safety issue as the lines were literally spraying oil and had the potential to spray oil onto the wheels/brakes creating a hazardous situation. mazda is now charging an exorbitant amount to repair something that shouldn't be occurring in the first place. this exact problem has led to a recall in canada, but mazda claims there aren't enough occurrences in the usa. that does not sit well with owners who commonly have this problem of which there are many that i have encountered on the internet. *tr.Mileage was 66600 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Nov 16, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING . oil cooler metal hoses have corroded due to road salt and driving in snowy areas (massachusetts). there is a recall in canada (special service program 76) for the mazda rx8 due to oil cooler lines getting corroded. weather in the northern states of united states is similar - i don't know why that is also not a problem for us and there is no recall in the usa. the rest of the car seems corrosion free and the car was washed every week in the winter and about once a month in the summer, specifically to get rid of road salt. dealer charge with parts and labor to replace the oil lines is $2100 !! car has 68,000 miles on it and is a 2005 model. my guess is the oil cooler lines were made of a bad material if they are corroding so easily while nothing else corrodes. *tr.Mileage was 68000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Nov 20, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with EXTERIOR LIGHTING . most models of the 2005 rx-8 are equipped with hid headlights. in order to prevent accidents, the headlights have a "cutoff" that prevent blinding oncoming drivers, which i understand is required by law. the headlights on this vehicle have an autoleveling function which is supposed to level the headlights at the proper height dependent on the position of the car's suspension. the headlight levelers are controlled by two sensors, one on the drivers side front and one on the driver side rear wheel hub, connected to the suspension components. there is a known defect with these sensors which causes the headlight levelers to malfunction, aiming the headlights either too low (which can cause an accident in the rx-8) or too high (which can cause an accident by blinding oncoming traffic). there is an electrical connector located beneath the car at each sensor that moisture can get inside, causing corrosion. this causes the sensors to fail and the headlights will auto-aim themselves in any orientation, and this cannot be overridden...i know, i have tried repeatedly to manually re-aim them myself. manually resetting the headlights will only cause the headlights to mis-aim themselves again when the car is restarted and the sensors return faulty signals. currently, my headlights are aimed far too high for oncoming traffic and i routinely get "flashed" by other drivers. driving my car at night is unsafe for myself and other drivers due to this defect. as previously noted, this is a known issue and there have been apparently enough complaints about it that mazda has issued a technical bulletin on this defect, and the levelers have been re-engineered to use more heavy-duty connectors. i would urge the nhtsa to evaluate this issue and compel mazda to issue a recall for this defect asap. thanks for your attention! link to technical bulletin: http://www.finishlineperformance.com/pdf/rx8/bulletin/09-008-07-1729a.pdf. *tr.Mileage was 48000 miles. Mazda Rx-8 2005 Air Bags Review #10367874

MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Oct 22, 2010.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with AIR BAGS . driver was backing out of a parking space when an extremely loud pop sounded resembling a backfire or the explosion of an aerosol can. after pulling back into the space, a further inspection of the noise revealed a malfunction with the rear passenger seat airbag. the door panel has been knocked askew resulting in a back door that will not open. the front seat passenger seat belt was jerked tight and remains completely locked up. had a passenger been sitting in the front seat, the tightening of the belt upon the malfunction of the airbag would have resulted in injury. the other airbags are of great concern at this point because if there is another malfunction when the car is in motion on the road, serious injury would occur. the airbag indicator light continues to either blink or remain constantly lit. the problem has not yet been addressed with the dealer as i'm guessing it will be very costly to fix. *tr.Mileage was 74000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on July 15, 2011.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC . 2005 rx-8 leaking oil cooler line faults breaks car veered off the road onto right side grass under heavy breaking due to suddenly slowing traffic. normally, car breaks very well, linearly, and straight. after checking what caused this, i found the entire left underside sprayed with engine oil. oil came from rusted engine cooler lines located right next to the front left wheel well. about a 10 second engine run showed a stream of oil spraying towards the tire through a crack in the rusted cooling line. underbody, left front tire, and breaks were covered with oil. there was no collision only because the area where car was pulled off to the side had no obstacles. lucky me! car is obviously not drivable as engine oil is visibly leaking and breaks are compromised with greasy oil residue. apparently canada has a recall for these faulty cooling lines - ¿rx-8 oil cooler hose ¿ special service program (ssp) 76¿ ¿ seems utterly appropriate as in an unlucky situation this could turn out fatal! *tt.Mileage was 35000 miles. MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on May 15, 2012.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with POWER TRAIN . **resubmit-didn't go through** i was driving approx 65 mph on the freeway and felt a kick/jolt and had a loss of power. my speed went down10-15 mph and although i tried to accelerate it wouldn't do anything. i pulled over to the shoulder and tried to exit but car refused to go into gear. every time i forced it into gear, the car would constantly stall and die. i had the ignition coil and spark plug replaced but now the clutch just sinks to the floor. i've tried to pump the clutch to get it into gear but this is quite dangerous on the road. my vehicle has trouble controlling its speed since there's a lag switching from 3rd to 4th, 5th to 6th since i have to pump my sunken clutch several times and fiddle with the shifter to actually kick my car into the next gear. my car is now over 100k miles and just read about the mazda rx8 clutch pedal recall online. this malfunction/safety issue was never announced professionally by my dealer. mazda had no problems contacting me via phone, email ,mail regarding bills but for some reason failed to give me a notice regarding this defect. i've been advised that repairing this problem is quite expensive and since my car although less than 8 years old has passed the extended warranty based on mileage, i'll be stuck driving this car without proper repairs? i feel mazda should've contacted all rx8 owners to reduce the number any future disasters. would there be any chance to extend the warranty for the clutch pedal based on mileage over 120k? i can't afford to purchase a new car at this moment but need to still commute to work without paying for repairs that would cost me an arm and a leg at the dealer? if this is a recall issue, i would feel more safe having an authorized dealer inspect the problem rather than a cheap auto shop that isn't fully aware of specific details. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 124000 miles. Mazda Rx-8 2005 Engine Review #10498181

MAZDA RX-8 2005 car safety problem was reported on Feb 01, 2013.MAZDA RX-8 2005, manufactured by MAZDA MOTOR CORP had a problem with ENGINE . i went to start my rx8 and it would not start. i called aaa to have it jumped, thinking it was a battery problem. the aaa employee sent to jump the car could not jump it and i had to tow it to my mechanic the next day. my personal mechanic looked at it and said it was a specific problem with the engine that was covered by an "extended warranty" mazda issued because the 2005 rx8s had so many complaints about this particular problem. instead of doing a recall, mazda does extended warranties. they did the same thing with the clutch pedal bracket, which i had to jump through hoops to get the dealership to take care of it at no cost to me. they always want to charge, even when it is something covered by a warranty. so, my husband had the car towed to the nearby dealership. automatically, they tell us we have to replace the battery because they need to do a diagnostic test to find out the problem. battery $185 with labor and $150 for a diagnostic test. then, we are told that only if they are able to prove that it was a specific problem covered in the warranty that mazda would cover it under the warranty. if they find it is not that specific part, we will have to pay out of pocket. i was told by my personal mechanic it was that particular issue which is covered by the warranty, but of course, mazda wants to do their own tests. my car has less than 50,000 miles on it and it is ridiculous that i would have to replace the engine for $4,000 when a quick online search shows that this is a very common problem with this specific car. i think mazda should have their feet held to the fire and do right by their customer. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 49814 miles.
