HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003 car safety problem was reported on Aug 17, 2011.HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003, manufactured by HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.) had a problem with EXTERIOR LIGHTING:HEADLIGHTS:SWITCH . in august of 2011, i noticed a burning smell while using the low beam headlights. sometimes the smell was quite strong, but i could not find where it was coming from. until i could find the problem, i decided only to use the car when i did not need to use the headlights. a couple of times i had to use the lights. eventually, they stopped working and i had to find the problem. when i took the collar off of the steering column, i noticed that the connector to the headlight (combination switch) was melted. there was a greenish/blue corrosion on all of the terminals and it looks like the switch terminals are made of a different metal from the connectors. it now makes sense...two dissimilar metals can cause a galvanic reaction which leads to corrosion which leads to high resistance which leads to heat build up. current draw on the wire for the low beams is 9 amps. i also have fog lights connected to this wire, but through a relay that only draws 0.1 amps. i called honda and they state that my vin is not covered at this point. the local honda dealer claims that the cause is the fog light wire being connected to the low beam wire. my response is that wire only adds 0.1 amps to the circuit and cannot be the cause of the melted connector...the cause is from the corrosion at the terminals. after some research, i see that my headlight switch (part #35255-s5a-a02) is used on many honda products that have the same issue with melted connectors. these models include the civic, fit, insight, and crv. millions are being recalled for this, but honda will not include mine. they know there is a problem and have developed a repair kit...part # 35012-s5a-307 to remedy. it includes the switch, a connector, and some wire. a recall campaign needs to be started for the 2003 model year (like mine) and any year or model that this headlight switch (#35255-s5a-a02) is used in. updated 11/25/11 *bf *tt .Mileage was 98345 miles. HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003 car safety problem was reported on Oct 03, 2005.HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003, manufactured by HONDA (AMERICAN HONDA MOTOR CO.) had a problem with POWER TRAIN . the transmission seemed to slip, the engine rpm's would go up but speed would not change. as you drove down the road you could see the tach which shows rpm go up & down, up & down all the time but the speed would stay the same. very poor gas mileage around the mid 30's not even close to the 50 mpg that we were told. then one day the car just made a bang and stopped, the transmission steel belt inside broke into many pieces and the car wouldn't move. $1800.00 to fix this then we still had the rpm up & down problem. then @ 80,000 miles the battery light came on had update done to computer, made the mpg even lower and we were told the hybrid battery is going bad, replacement cost $3000.00. couldn't afford this then the hybrid battery died 100% couldn't drive car without any kind of charge in battery and it also cause another part of the hybrid system to go bad which cost $1700.00 to fix. so we needed a new battery @ $3000.00 and another hybrid component for $1700.00 so we could drive this car. it had under 100,000 miles and honda wouldn't help pay a dime, and all this not to long after we spent $1800.00 to have transmission belt fixed. so we traded in the car to honda for a ford. we also spent $1200.00 to have the ac compressor replaced on this car so it was a lemon from the start and all this time honda wouldn't help at all even though we had complained time and time again. now they are in a class action law suit which i hope they are made to pay millions. i would never purchase another honda hybrid, this car was to save us money on gas because of the mpg but it cost us thousands in repairs that by far cost us more than the money we saved in gasoline. *tr.Mileage was 65000 miles. HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003 car safety problem was reported on Dec 12, 2012.HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003, manufactured by Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) had a problem with STEERING . i was driving north in the # 3 or 4 lane on i-405 just north of irvine, ca in intermittent rain, when the car began swerving to the left. my efforts to counter-steer failed to regain control of the car, and the car spun counter-clockwise to the left until i hit the center divider facing backward with the passenger side of the car and continued to spin until facing forward. i managed to pull the car to a shoulder on the center divide and stop. trying to move the car forward met with considerable friction. soon the highway patrol arrived and blocked traffic and asked me if i was ok and able to move the car to the right side. despite the friction, i was able to move the car to the right, encountering difficulty steering the car parallel to the roadway. i told the officer that i thought the car had hydroplaned and spun out. because no other vehicles were involved and i was not injured, the officer offered me the option to file a report or not, and i decided not to file a report. the car was towed (flatbed) outside a body shop near my home. the rf wheel was severely toed-in, and when i examined it, the sway bar end link was disconnected. i drove slowly a few blocks home, noticing the difficulty in controlling the steering, even at low speed, and the similarity to how the car suddenly was handling on the freeway. this made me concerned that the failure of the end-link and/or steering may have caused the lack of control, rather than resulting from the impact with the center divide. never in over 20 years of driving have i experienced, in any weather conditions, the complete lack of responsiveness to steering input that suddenly occurred. the car is still in my driveway. if it would be helpful to examine the car, please let me know asap. *tr.Vehicle was involved in a crash. 0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 128162 miles. HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003 car safety problem was reported on July 16, 2013.HONDA CIVIC HYBRID 2003, manufactured by Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) had a problem with AIR BAGS . the srs (supplemental restraint system) warning light came on my dashboard. this is a known design/quality defect. honda provided extended warranty coverage for this item for 150,000 miles/10 years. i took the car in for service on 7/16/2013, 3 months and 5 days beyond 10 years. given the mileage of the vehicle and the fact that the car was just beyond warranty, i expected that it would be fixed as a warranty item. instead i was billed $65.14 for reading a code from the diagnostic log. this was a required check by honda because it could have been a seat belt sensor issue which would have been covered for no charge. since this error code (15-3 ods unit failure) appears typically after several sensor errors, it is probable that the errors were occurring even during the extended warranty period. i also asked for a complete listing of the diagnostic codes since i paid for it, but i was refused and told it wasn't available. the dealership, frontier honda of longmont, colorado and honda corporation were unwilling to perform any service without me paying for it. the estimate for the additional work was $403.40 plus tax. i was the hardware product manager for several worldwide printer products of a fortune 100 corporation. i find it inconceivable that honda would sacrifice their reputation, customer good will, and potential future liability exposure over this item. i would strongly encourage a mandatory recall of all affected vehicles given the approach honda is taking. *tr.0 person(s) were injured. 0 person(s) died.Mileage was 83070 miles.
